  • Scope and content: Original caption: Cape Canaveral, Fla. - Moment of liftoff. Astronaut M. Scott Carpenter inside the Aurora 7 spacecraft atop the Atlas booster seconds after leaving Pad 14 at Cape Canaveral. Carpenter became the second American to orbit the earth and after three orbits landed approximately 200 miles east of Puerto Rico where he was plucked from the ocean by long range Navy helicopters from the Carrier USS intrepid.
