English: 88225756 : The Centaur space vehicle slanted to boost a Surveyor spacecraft for first U.S. soft-landing on the moon enters special test facility in San Diego, Calif., to begin rehearsals for the lunar mission. Centaur joined an Atlas first stage, already in the test facility, for an intensive test program in which all stages of moon-probe vehicle will perforfm flight operations, except actual engine ignition, just as they will during the lunar mission. The test facility is operated for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) by the Convair division of General Dynamics Corps., under direction of NASA's Lewis Research Center, Cleaveland, Ohio. For NASA, Convair produces the Atlas first stage and the Centuar second stage of the lunar exploration vehicle. |
