Summary

Description
English: 88226036 :Piction ID--MOONFLIGHT BY MOONLIGHT -- Atlas and Centaur space vehicles rehearse in test stand at General Dynamics/Convair, San Diego, with a model (enclosed within nose fairing) of the Surveyor spacecraft which will be launched on its first flight toward the moon later this year. The Atlas (left) and Centuar vehicles are mated electrically and perform the majority of the moon flight operations (except for engine ignition), jsut as they will do later this year during the first Surveyor lunar mission. That flight (AC-7) will test Surveyor's capability to perform a mid-course maneuver, essential to soft-land on the moon;s surface. Surveyor spacecraft to be used on the actual mission was not tested. Purpose of th flight simulation is to reduce preparations time at Cape Kennedy, Fla., and to insure that the entire vehicle is ready for the mission at the required time. Rehearsals are conducted in the new National Aeronautics and Space Administration Combined Systems Test Stand (CSTS)--first such facility ever build for ground testing of all stages of a space vehicle. CSTS is operated for NASA by Convair Division of General Dynamics, under direction of NASA's Lewis Reserarch Center, Celeveland, Ohio.----Please tag these photos so information can be recorded.---Note: This material may be protected by Copyright Law (Title 17 U.S.C.)--Repository: San Diego Air and Space Museum
