Nederlands: De Samo maken zelf het vlechtwerk voor dagelijks gebruik. Zo leert iedereen uit gespleten en geplette gierststengels een slaapmat te vlechten. Ook de matten die als afsluiting van het huis gebruikt worden worden door de bewoners zelf vervaardigd. Het vlechten van manden wordt echter door een specialist gedaan, de mandenmaker. Hij vervaardigt uit jonge houtsoorten (twijgen) allerlei typen manden.
De opname is gemaakt tijdens één van de twee verzamelexpedities die het Tropenmuseum in 1970-1971 ondernam ter voorbereiding op de grote tentoonstelling in 1971-1972, getiteld 'Samo. Een Afrikaans Savannevolk in ontwikkeling'. De expedities duurden elk drie maanden en werden uitgevoerd door de heren J.T. Broekhuijse en F.M. Cowan. De man staat ook afgebeeld in de catalogus bij de hierboven genoemde tentoonstelling met het bijschrift 'Manden worden gevlochten van gespleten gierststengels' (1971: 28). |
