| Description |
On April 16, 2019, a meteor was observed over the East Coast around 10:57 p.m. EDT. The American Meteor Society received more than 400 reports of the meteor, which was seen from Roanoke to Boston. The GOES-16 (GOES East) Geostationary Lightning Mapper picked up the light signature of the fireball. This total optical energy product image shows the variable brightness along the meteor’s path. While designed for mapping lightning flashes, GLM can also observe large meteors. The instrument takes 500 images of Earth every second, allowing it to measure the shape of a meteor “light curve,” or the change in brightness of a meteor with time, with millisecond precision.
