The original finding aid described this as: Description: The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), held by Dicovery's, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 103's, remote manipulator system (RMS) end effector, hovers aloft prior to its release from the spacecraft as it undergoes STS-48 pre-deployment checkout. UARS components that are visible include (left to right): the Solar Stellar Pointing Platform (SSPP); the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) spectrometer; the Cryogenic Limb Array Etalon Spectrometer (CLAES) (top, above RMS end effector); the Particle Environment Monitor (PEM) Zenith Energetic Particle System (ZEPS) (next to outrigger truss); and the PEM Nadir Energetic Particle System (NEPS) magnetometer (bottom right). The cloud-covered surface of the Earth is visible below the satellite. The image was taken with an Electronic Still Camera (ESC) as part of the Development Test Objective (DTO) 648, Electronic Still Photography. The digital image was stored on a removable hard disk or small optical disk and could be converted to a format suitable for downlink transmission.
